Google Ads + AI Agents: Manage Your Account in Plain English
Connect Google Ads to Claude, ChatGPT, or any AI assistant with Xylo and run campaigns, budgets, and reports by chatting. No GAQL, no spreadsheets, no code.
Hand your Google Ads account to an AI agent
Running Google Ads is a grind of small, repeating tasks. You review search term reports, trim wasted spend with negative keywords, nudge bids, test new ad copy, shift budget toward what is converting, and double-check that conversion tracking still fires. Each one means clicking through the Google Ads interface or exporting another spreadsheet.
Xylo lets you skip all of that. It connects your Google Ads account to the AI assistant you already use, so you manage the account by talking to it. You ask a question or give an instruction in plain English, the agent does the real work inside your account, and it tells you exactly what changed.
Show me my worst-performing search campaigns this week and pause anything spending over $100 with no conversions.
That is the whole interaction. No GAQL. No reports to download. No glue code.
If you are new to how AI assistants connect to outside tools, our MCP protocol explainer covers the basics. The short version: Xylo is the connector that gives your AI agent safe, structured access to your ad accounts.
What Xylo actually is
Xylo is an MCP server, a connector that sits between your AI assistant and your ad platforms. You connect your accounts once, point your AI app at Xylo, and then just talk to it. Behind the scenes Xylo gives the agent more than 300 read and write ad operations across Meta, Google, and TikTok, covering essentially every surface you would touch in Google Ads Manager, plus AI creative analysis and cross-platform reporting.
It works with Claude (claude.ai or Claude Desktop), ChatGPT (any paid plan, on the web), Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, and anything else that speaks MCP. You bring the AI assistant you already like. Xylo gives it hands inside your Google Ads account.
Why this beats using the API directly
The Google Ads API is genuinely hard to work with, which is exactly why letting an AI agent talk to Xylo instead is such a relief. A few of the historical pain points:
-
GAQL. Google's API uses its own query language. Writing it correctly is fiddly, and one small mistake means a failed query and no answer. With Xylo plus your AI agent, you never write a query. You ask a question in English and Xylo handles the lookup.
-
Money in "micros." The raw API reports every dollar as 1,000,000 micros, a constant source of off-by-a-million mistakes. Xylo speaks in plain dollars, so a $300 daily budget is just $300.
-
A pile of credentials. Connecting to the API normally means juggling several keys and tokens. With Xylo you click through a standard Google sign-in once. Your tokens are encrypted (AES-256) and the AI agent never sees them.
-
Cryptic codes everywhere. Status and type values come back as machine enums. Xylo normalizes all of that into clean, readable data your agent and you can actually reason about.
The point is not that you should learn any of this. The point is that you never have to. You ask, Xylo does it.
Getting connected (about a minute, no code)
You do not need to be technical to set this up.
- Create a free Xylo account. No credit card. Sign up at xylomcp.com.
- Connect Google Ads. Authorize your account through Google's standard sign-in screen and pick the account you want to manage. You can connect Meta and TikTok the same way whenever you are ready.
- Add Xylo to your AI app. In Claude, ChatGPT, or your editor, add Xylo as a connector using this address:
https://xylomcp.com/api/mcp. In Claude that is the Connectors screen; in ChatGPT it is under the developer/connector settings on a paid plan. Paste the address, approve access, and you are done. - Start asking. Your assistant can now see and act on your Google Ads account.
That is it. From here on, everything happens in the chat.
What it looks like day to day
Here are real workflows, the way they actually play out in a conversation.
Weekly performance review
You: How are my search campaigns doing this week?
Agent: (pulls the last 7 days from your Google Ads account)
Here is your search performance for the past 7 days:
Campaign Spend Clicks Conversions CPA CTR Brand Terms $342.10 4,521 189 $1.81 18.2% Competitor Terms $567.30 1,234 23 $24.67 4.1% Generic - Running Shoes $1,203.40 3,456 45 $26.74 3.2% Long Tail - Specific Models $234.50 876 34 $6.90 7.8% Brand Terms is your strongest line at a $1.81 cost per conversion. Competitor Terms is expensive at $24.67. Want me to pull the search terms behind it so we can cut the ones that never convert?
Budget reallocation
You: Move budget from the Generic campaign to Long Tail. Long Tail converts way cheaper.
Agent: Today they are set to:
- Generic - Running Shoes: $300/day
- Long Tail - Specific Models: $50/day
I will drop Generic to $100/day and raise Long Tail to $250/day.
(updates both budgets)
Done. Generic is now $100/day (was $300) and Long Tail is $250/day (was $50). One heads-up: big swings can briefly unsettle Google's bidding, so I would watch Long Tail's cost per conversion for the next two to three days as spend ramps. I can check back in on Friday if you want.
Cleaning up wasted spend
You: Pull my search terms report and add the obvious junk as negative keywords.
Agent: (pulls the search terms behind your active campaigns)
These terms spent money with zero conversions and look off-target: "free running shoes," "running shoes repair," "diy shoe," and "jobs running shoe store." I will add them as campaign negatives unless you want any kept. Confirm and I will apply them.
Diagnosing a drop
You: My conversion rate fell this week. What happened?
Agent: (compares this week against last week)
Metric Last Week This Week Change Impressions 245,000 312,000 +27% Clicks 12,300 14,100 +15% Conversions 423 389 -8% Conv. Rate 3.44% 2.76% -20% Spend $2,145 $2,567 +20% Impressions grew faster than clicks, and clicks grew faster than conversions, which usually means you are reaching a broader, less qualified audience. The Generic campaign drove most of the extra spend without extra conversions. I would check whether any ad groups loosened to broader match recently. Want me to look?
Notice the pattern. The agent pulls the data, explains it like a smart analyst, and waits for your go-ahead before changing anything that spends money.
Beyond reporting
Because Xylo exposes essentially every Google Ads surface as a tool, your agent can do far more than read numbers. In plain conversation you can have it:
- Build new search, Display, or Performance Max campaigns, ad groups, and ads.
- Adjust budgets, bids, and schedules.
- Add and remove keywords, including shared negative keyword lists.
- Pull search term reports and quality scores.
- Build remarketing and Customer Match audiences and upload member lists.
- Set up conversion actions and upload offline conversions.
- Run A/B experiments and promote the winner.
- Review and apply Google's recommendations, or dismiss the ones you do not want.
You describe the outcome you want. The agent figures out the steps.
One conversation, all three platforms
Most advertisers do not live in Google alone. Because the same Xylo connection also covers Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and TikTok Ads, your agent can compare and manage everything in a single chat, with true cross-platform reporting that normalizes the numbers across all three.
You: Compare my Google, Meta, and TikTok spend and cost per conversion this month.
Agent: (pulls each platform and blends the totals)
Platform Spend Conversions CPA Best Campaign Google Ads $4,823 312 $15.46 Brand Terms ($1.81) Meta Ads $3,247 287 $11.32 Retargeting ($6.45) TikTok Ads $1,910 124 $15.40 Smart+ Prospecting Total $9,980 723 $13.80 Meta is your most efficient channel overall, but Google's Brand Terms line is the single best campaign anywhere. You are spending the least on TikTok despite a similar cost per conversion to Google, so there may be room to test more there. Want a short written summary you can paste into your Monday update?
You can ask for that recurring report once and have the agent produce it on demand, in plain language, ready to share.
Safety is built in
Handing an AI agent the keys to a live ad account sounds scary until you see the guardrails:
- New campaigns are created paused. Nothing spends until you review and turn it on yourself.
- Your credentials stay hidden. Tokens are encrypted with AES-256, and the agent never sees them.
- You stay in the loop. A good agent confirms before making spend-affecting changes, as in the examples above. You can always tell it to ask first.
- Everything is logged. Your Xylo dashboard shows what was done, so you can audit any change.
A reasonable habit: start with reporting questions for a few days, get comfortable with how your agent works, then let it start making changes.
What it costs
You can do all of this on the free tier: one ad account per platform, the full Google Ads tool set, 50 agent actions a month, no credit card. When you outgrow it, the Brand plan is $67/month with a 7-day free trial (three ad accounts, unlimited actions, team seats, and bulk operations), and the Agency plan is $197/month for shops running many accounts. See the prompts library for ideas on what to ask once you are connected.
For developers (optional)
If you would rather automate against a REST endpoint, Xylo has one too. The base URL is https://api.xylomcp.com, you authenticate with an x-api-key header, and Google Ads calls live under /v1/google/... with an x-google-customer-id header to target an account. Budgets are in dollars, responses come back as { data, meta }, and new campaigns default to paused for safety. Under the hood Xylo talks to Google Ads API v23 (alongside Meta Graph API v25.0 and TikTok Marketing API v1.3), so you are always on a current version without maintaining it yourself. Full details are in the API documentation. For most people, though, the AI agent path above is faster and there is nothing to maintain.
